Fontainebleau: short trip

This is post about the areas we visited for bouldering the forest of Fontainebleau. The mission of today, was to find bouldering spots we didn’t visited, yet. Two of us have been four the fourth time to the forest, but we could still find some new places for bouldering…

Troglodyte (Nemours)

Mont d’olivet

After arriving at the camping site, we went to the first area for this short trip. (it was about 7 pm) We started bouldering almost in the darkness, so don’t ask me how it looks like ;)

Mont d’olivet (Nemours)

First real day in Fontainbleau. We went to this small, quiet and very nice area which provides an easy orange and blue parcous. Good to start!

Apremont
Don’t ask me why we have been alone there. Apremont is a really cool place for hard and high boulders! The area has three regions (east, central, west), each of them is large enough to stay there for the hole day.

Gorge aux chats (Trois pignons)
Last trip for us (Barbara and Me). This spot is close to the camping site la musardiere and was the first one we met other climbers. The blue parcous is very easy and the red one is quite challenging.

TikZ: add fancy graphs to your tex file

As I’m again, again and again using TikZ for graphs and co. in LaTeX. This is not a post about something new but something that always amazes me again and again.

For those how don’t know LaTeX, checkout the LaTeX project under http://www.latex-project.org/

TikZ is a package for creating graphics, it is build on top of PGF and allows creating graphics in an easy manner. There also exists a great documentation (see Documentation) and a large database of examples (see Examples). My all time favorite is the visualization of Prim’s MST algorithm.

If you ever need to create graphs in LaTeX, checkout TikZ!

climbing projects

For the first time, I’ll try to set some climbing routes that are hard, at least for me. This report will be updated if I make some progress on the projects.

Current Projects:

  • Love me tender (9+/10-)
    - boulder route at the Thalhofergrag
    - nice, the last move is really hard
  • Mystic way (9)
    - nice sloper problem at Holzschlag
    - for me, there are two harder moves.
  • Crackless 1 (9+/10-)
    - boulder route at Holzschlag

at least we had one week of sun…

After one week of beautiful snow ;) in the mountains, we changed our plans and went back to Vienna. At least the third week of our vacations, back in Osttirol, was sunny.

Therefore, poorly, we could only climb up some smaller and easier mountains and our original plans is still to be done! But besides of the snow we had the great opportunity to sleep at the Celler Hütte, which indeed is a really great self-supporter hut.

And now some impressions of the snow and the mountains in Osttirol.

Les Calanques

This is a short after climbing report about my first impression of the climbing spots at the calanques. We went there for a week to visit some nice and easier climbing areas. The following descriptions of the climbing areas we visited are my personal opinions, so take care. ;)

  • Morgiou – nice climbing with a lot of perfect bolt sport climbing routes
  • En Vau – really beautiful place with really nice multipitch routes
  • Sormiou – wide and open area with nice climbing, but you have to pay for the parking

Last but not least some impressions of the week.

Ötscher – Rauher Kamm part 2

Rauhen Kamm again and again.. ;)

I decided to go for the Rauhen Kamm again. This time more relaxed and with a good friend of mine. It took us 5 1/2 h up to the summit with many breaks, including hot noddle break!

Again, the weather and the mountain was beautiful and therefore it was possible to go without crampons. Now some impressions of this wonderful day.

Belaying training

Regarding our upcoming belay training event. ;)
Some helpful information about what I’ll talk about and further details about belay technics.

At first we will talk about  THE belay (HMS). Further Details about this method can be found under the following link:

http://www.bergundsteigen.at

Later on we will talk about the so called “Gasswerk method” introduced by Britschgi, Buehler and Seitz called after the Swiss climbing hall “Gasswerk”. This method should be used for belaying the lead climber using the GriGri. Further details can be found on the following video:

Another topic will be belaying a taller person. In this case the weight difference should be at most 30% regarding the climber. If this is not the case you can increase the friction on the rope.

For the alpine climbing interested people we will also discuss what to consider for belaying from a fix point. For further information see:
